Proteolytic activities of Lactobacillus fermentum biofilm populations in the presence of (a) surface-associated or (b) fluid-phase MUC5B mucins. CSLM images showing biofilm cells growing in (a) the presence of a surface-coat of MUC5B mucins or (b) in the presence of MUC5B mucins in the fluid phase. Proteolytic activity was visualized by incubation with a FITC-conjugated casein substrate (green) for 1 hour. Cells were then counterstained using Syto 24 (red).
